What is Elementary School Team Tennis?

UYT Elementary School Team Tennis is an opportunity for boys and girls grades 4-6 to participate in after-school team tennis. Players of all levels and experience are encouraged to come have fun with their friends. Whether you are an advanced player seeking more opportunities to compete or a novice seeking to learn tennis, UYT Elementary School Team Tennis has something for everyone.

The format will be the same as the 6th-9th-grade middle school team tennis league, but will use age-appropriate orange balls and court size to aid in the technique development, and include instruction designed for the age and skill level of the players.

UYT Elementary currently competes in the Provo, Alpine, Nebo, Jordan, Canyons, Granite, and Washington County school districts. Teams practice 2 times per week in the evenings and play a match each week against another team. There is no tryout to participate on the team, everyone is welcome.

In the event that there are not enough participants registered for a particular team, then that team will be combined with a different nearby team.

How do the competitive matches work?

Match competition formats are similar to high school and middle school tennis competitions. Each team has a varsity squad, a JV squad, and an exhibition squad.

  • The varsity squad consists of the top 8 players. The varsity squad of one team will play against the varsity squad of another team in the following format: 1st Singles, 2nd Singles, 1st Doubles, 2nd Doubles, 3rd Doubles.

  • The rest of the team is on the JV squad. All players on the JV squad play doubles.

  • If your child would like to participate with the team at practice, but would rather not play competitive matches that is fine, just please let us and your coach know.

At the end of the season, the teams and players will compete in post-season tournaments.

Who are the coaches and directors?

Each team has its own coach that runs practices and matches and is in charge of player placement and development. The coaches are hired from a pool of local tennis coaches and competitive tennis players. Only the best candidates are selected. There are also paid and volunteer assistant coaches who help the kids throughout the season. If you're interested in helping out as a coach click HERE to apply and for more info. Children of coaches are able to participate in the league for FREE.

Nathan Hillier is the Managing Director of UYT SLC area and Rob Allen is the Director of UYT. He is a USPTA Nationally certified professional tennis instructor and the head tennis coach at Provo High School. Click HERE for more info about Rob.

All coaches are independent contractors, screened and contracted by UYT to coach and run their respective teams.
